Coleman was raised in the Lancashire town of Blackpool. She attended Arnold School in Blackpool. She was a headgirl and earned straight A grades in her A Levels. The 2009 British Soap Awards she was awarded in the Best Actress Sexiest Female and the Best Dramatic Performance category. Coleman was also nominated as Best Actress at the TV Choice Awards. Steven Moffat announced at a Doctor Who press conference on 21 March that Coleman, who had replaced Karen Gillan as the companion of the Doctor since Arthur Darvill left the series, would be playing the role of Matt Smith. Moffat selected her for the role due to her being the most successful in her interactions with Smith and spoke more quickly than the actor. She is however, more known for TV projects than movies.
