Ali studied in Wellesley College, where she learned about art history. The magazine she worked for was Fashion when she graduated. Her interest in fashion photography led her to become a model of the highest caliber, a career she continued to pursue until the year 1968 when she began a slow but steady start in the course of the beginning of a film career that was sporadic in part due to her marriage to Steve McQueen.
